6 Day Machame Route Kilimanjaro Overview

Day by day itinerary

Day 1: Machame Gate to Machame Camp

Your Kilimanjaro trek begins with a drive from Moshi to Machame Gate, where registration is completed and you meet your guides and porters. The trail climbs steadily through lush rainforest filled with diverse vegetation and wildlife. Expect some muddy sections as you hike to Machame Camp.

 

Distance: 10.8 km (6.7 miles), approximately 6 hours.

Day 2: Machame Camp to Shira Camp

Today hike leads from the rainforest into the stunning alpine moorland zone, revealing expansive views and rugged mountain scenery. Trek across the southwestern slopes of Mount Kilimanjaro toward Shira Camp, passing dramatic volcanic landscapes. The route follows the “climb high, sleep low” principle, supporting proper acclimatization.

 

Distance: 10 km (6.4 miles), approximately 5 hours.

Day 3: Shira Camp to Barranco Camp

Today’s trek ascends through the alpine moorland toward Lava Tower at 4,600 meters, providing valuable acclimatization and spectacular mountain views. After reaching this high point, descend to Barranco Camp following the climb high, sleep low strategy. On clear days, enjoy distant views of Mount Meru across the plains.

 

Distance: 5.4 km (3.4 miles), 7 to 8 hours.

Day 4: Barranco Camp to Barafu Camp

Today’s trek features the exciting ascent of the Barranco Wall, offering spectacular views of Kibo’s southern glaciers and surrounding valleys. After passing through Karanga Valley, continue across alpine desert terrain to Barafu Camp, the final base before summit night. Rest, hydrate, and prepare for the midnight ascent.

 

Distance: 5.4 km (3.4 miles), 7 to 8 hours.

8-Day Lemosho Route Kilimanjaro

Day 5: Barafu Camp (4,640m) to Uhuru Peak and Descent to Mweka Camp

Your summit day begins around midnight with a challenging ascent to Stella Point and onward to Uhuru Peak (5,895m), the highest point in Africa. Witness a breathtaking sunrise over Kilimanjaro’s glaciers before celebrating your achievement at the summit. Afterward, descend to Barafu Camp for rest, then continue to Mweka Camp.

 

Distance: 16 km (9.6 miles), 13 to 15 hours.

Meals included: Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner.

Accommodation: Mweka Camp

Day 6: Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate and Return to Moshi or Arusha

On the final day, descend through the beautiful rainforest to Mweka Gate, enjoying the last views of Mount Kilimanjaro. After completing park formalities, receive your summit certificate in recognition of your achievement. A transfer returns you to Moshi or Arusha, where a hot shower, celebration, and relaxation await.
